This past Sunday I went to a party for a dear friend who is a former colleague from my teaching days. The occasion was her 95th birthday. It was a wonderful time and a heartwarming experience. She continues to be an inspiration for all who know her. For me she has been a lodestar since I first met her over thirty years ago.
I felt honored to be included along with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. It was wonderful to spend time and get caught up with everyone. The party was an affirmation of the good things in our lives and what is truly worthwhile. It reminded me of the closing monologue from Lake Wobegon “where all the women are strong, all the men good looking and all the children are above average.” I came away feeling good.
With our busy lives and the current politics we too often get stressed and look to the dark side of things. We need to take a step back and appreciate our families and friends and the promise of new generations.
When you talk with Virginia again, give her my “happy birthday” greetings!
