It is not hyperbole to say that the survival of our democratic government might hang in the balance of the looming midterm elections There’s plenty of apathy, ignorance and malice to skew the outcome in favor of Republicans bent on revenge and self-promotion.
Seldom a day goes by that a friend or acquaintance doesn’t mention how bad politics is right now. People are exhausted. The never ending intrusion of partisan ads, shouting heads on TV, and barrage of mail and computer messages is awful. It has led to an emotional overload and a feeling of helplessness. The scary thing is that we start to accept the dysfunction as normal. For Americans it should be an insight for how politics work in much of the world. We have too long taken our democracy for granted.
If you never vote for a Democrat again, do so this November. Put aside your personal feelings and partisan inclinations. Electing Democrats to Congress is the only way we can put a stop to the unbridled corruption and authoritarian actions of the Trump administration. Neither Congress nor the Supreme Court are going to rein in Trump and his lackeys.
We are only a month from the election. The Republicans have begun to dump an avalanche of negative ads. They will flood the media markets with false information and try to intimidate election officials, contest voting procedures and possibly disrupt the election. Don’t believe the polls; remember the 2016 presidential election. And don’t succumb to apathy as it is easy to do after so many months of turmoil. Vote early if possible.
A Republican win this midterm would be tantamount to confirming the Trump agenda. It requires little imagination to think what Trump would do if Republicans retain control of Congress; he would be a “lame duck” free to vent his rage and do irreparable damage The outcome would be a mandate for continued pillage and dictatorial policies.
This is not a “business as usual” midterm and it is not about the competing views of Democrats and Republicans. It is about putting a stop to an out of control president and saving our Republic.
