Like me, many of you must be marking time in disbelief about our politics. This view is especially acute with what is happening here in Georgia. The run-off contest for the Senate has become a circus.
The incumbent senator David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, who was appointed to fill the term of retiring Senator Johnny Isakson, are both running scurrilous campaigns against their Democratic opponents Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. A new demagoguery has replaced race with cries of socialism, communism, and Marxism to scare the wits out of the citizenry. If that is not enough, these Democrats are also thugs and radicals who have taken both counsel and illegal contributions from the Chinese. Can you imagine?
Those of you reading this in Georgia have probably also received literally hundreds of emails, texts, and literature from both parties with pleas for support and financial contributions. The state is almost in a state of delirium tremens over the January 5th senate run-off. Recently, Lin Wood, a local Trump attorney, impersonated Trump in haranguing rally goers not to vote in the upcoming run-off. It was truly a spectacle worthy of a Saturday Night Live skit complete with appropriate gestures, the red MAGA cap, and all the usual vitriol and contempt of a Trump campaign event. Meanwhile, the local airwaves are jammed with competing commercials, many following one another so as to get the last word.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, the Perdue and Loeffler stuff is heavy on mud-slinging and light on substance as to issues and serious concerns. They never mention the ongoing pandemic which Perdue early on claimed would never amount to much. It seems, in addition to worrying about thugs and communists, the two senators are all about “motherhood, the American flag, and apple pie” only!
