As truth goes the recent election didn’t change much other than get rid of our out-of-control president. Everything else basically stayed the course with the Democrats holding on to the House and the Republicans headed toward winning the Senate again provided they can win at least one of the two contested seats in Georgia.
As a Georgia resident I have been inundated with campaign pleas and appeals from both Democrats and Republicans. This could get real nasty. The accusations and counter-accusations stretch one’s credulity at best and insult our intelligence at worst.
While the Democrats – Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff – tell us that electing the Republicans will be a vote against everything from climate change to improved health care, the Republicans are principally resorting to name calling and outrageous assertions.
Incumbents David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler have teamed up attending campaign rallies together, Their television spots and email literature scream out charges labeling Warnock and Ossoff as thugs, radicals, Marxists, socialists and communists. They warn that an apocalypse is coming if the Democrats are elected.
Upon receiving the Republican pitches I get embarrassed about how low our campaigning has become. It apparently pays to hurl ridiculous charges, use highly charged words and put out lies about political opponents; It works and that embarrasses me. Are we that dumb? Can we not see that scaring the hell out of people works and there is no need to address substantive issues that confront our people and state?
As voters we need to send the message that we expect more from our elected officials than mud-slinging and undisguised contempt for the citizenry. Both Perdue and Loeffler are shameless in their arrogance.
