Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a reception for Jon Ossoff, Georgia’s senior senator. It was a spirited get-together at a beautiful private residence on the island. I was struck by how many Republicans were there to support a Democrat—old school Republicans with the honesty and courage to speak out against Trump and the MAGA crowd. It felt good to know that many of us still think of ourselves as Americans first despite political differences. I met some very interesting people.
Ossoff, an energetic thirty-nine-year-old with an impressive personal portfolio, talked for about 45 minutes, took questions and made himself available for conversation and photo ops with his many supporters. The senator spoke to his support among Republicans, told his audience that he worked for them while empathizing that the seat he holds is not his but belongs to the people of Georgia. As to Trump, he said that we have never seen this kind of brazen corruption in our nation’s history as the president works to “amass as much power and wealth in one family as possible.”
Ossoff deserves our support in his reelection bid to the United States Senate. His reelection will immeasurably help the Democrats win control of the Senate to challenge the dysfunctional MAGA Republicans and restore sanity to Washington. Equally important, Ossoff’s reelection may very well signal that Georgians are ready to turn their back on corruption and incompetent “good-old boy” politicians. Ossoff is strikingly different from the stereotypical Georgia politician who “goes along and gets along” with little regard for the best interests of the state or the union. Senator Ossoff is presidential timber.
