Here we go again. Just hours before a presidential “debate,” we are primed by the media and the political parties to believe that something meaningful is about to take place as to the direction of the country, who will be elected our leader and what our fate as a people will be in the immediate future. But it ain’t gonna happen. This is no Lincoln-Douglas debate.
What we are soon to witness is the dance of the pundits, psychologists and soothsayers who hope to win the night for their candidates. There will be no substantive discussion or debate of policy issues, no insights as to political philosophy and certainly not an honest appraisal of past failures. In fact, there will be an unprecedented lot of outright lying.
This is where we find ourselves in today’s politics. Tonight is a “performance” more than a “debate.” The idea is to look good and not mess up – it’s all makeup and showmanship. Partisans hope and pray for a “gotcha moment” that will score points for their candidate.
That’s all.
