Like many of you I have followed the ongoing hush money trial of Trump in New York. It is virtually impossible to avoid it, given the media attention and the circus that is the current political scene. As the trial winds down, it is my take that it won’t change any minds or have much of an impact at all on the 2024 presidential election.
The fact is that the majority of us have already made up our minds about Trump. Those of us who believe that he should never be allowed near the White House again will feel the same way whether he is convicted or not. Win or lose, the MAGA crowd will stand by him. Another fact is that a vast majority of the electorate has paid little or no attention to the trial; for them it is simply an annoying cacophony to be endured.
Increasingly, it has become apparent that the Trump conundrum must be settled in the political arena not by the courts. This is a political problem short and simple. It should have been settled by the second impeachment trial after the January 6th attack on the Capital and subsequent attempts to overthrow the 2020 election. Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger and Mitt Romney did their duty while their fellow Republicans committed hari-kari on behalf of the American people.
This is the Framers worst nightmare!
