The latest news seems to signal that our politics is returning to normal and that the crazies are losing their appeal. I sure hope so. If this is the case, one has to wonder what took our politicians and leaders so long to realize the absurdity and dangers of following Trump and the MAGA people.
The biggest sign is that Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House, defied his party and successfully supported aid for Ukraine. This action together with waning support for Republican right-wing obstructionists such as Marjorie Taylor Greene suggest that maybe, just maybe, the Republican party is coming to its senses and deferring to its “adults in the room” rather than its loud-mouthed wing nuts. We’ll see.
If this turns out to be the case, of course, the question remains as to what will happen with the 35-40% of the electorate that has continued to vote for Trump and like-minded candidates since 2016. Will these people finally get religion and understand that they were conned and downright wrong in supporting a seriously flawed person like Trump no matter what he promised them or how much they hated Democrats? Will they have the common sense to vote for decent Republicans who want to actually govern and don’t want to burn the house down?
And, will they have the courage and patriotism to vote for Joe Biden in 2024 to head off the chaos and disaster that a second Trump administration would bring?
