Do you ever take time to think about our political lives during the last seven years? If so, you must acknowledge that these times have been characterized by turmoil, rancor and fruitless actions that have done little to address the nation’s needs or problems. This is especially evident when one watches the Republicans in action, both at the state and local levels and in Congress. Look at the antics of Representatives Margie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, and Senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, for example.
American political history has always had its crazies, conspiracists, corrupters and self-aggrandizing politicians, but the election of 2016 ushered in a tacit approval for these elements and their potential practitioners to gain power. Donald Trump was the “Joker” who gave them free rein in the political arena.
I took a long year off from writing and commenting, largely from exhaustion and disgust, but also with the hope that somehow things might improve and change for the good. Unfortunately, nothing has changed since 2016 and, if anything, our politics have gotten worse with little hope on the horizon.
The upcoming 2024 election looms large as the “mother of all elections” to sort things out for better or worse. The 2024 election has the potential to mimic Adolf Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor of Germany in 1933. This might strike some as hyperbole, but the prospect is scary and deserves consideration as the political process moves forward.
The solution is simple. Voters must look beyond partisanship and personality politics and choose new leaders. More immediately, Congressional Republicans must sober up and have the courage to take on those in their party who thrive on disruption for solely selfish reasons.
And finally, Republicans might want to think the unthinkable and vote for Democrats this one time to save the Republic.
Rancor, turmoil, corrupters, “Joker,” and specifically Marjorie Taylor Green! My stomach turns!
Thanks, we must not keep our mouths shut!
