It’s a rainy day in our little mountains and in our nation. The rain here will soon pass and give way to warm sunny days, but I’m not so sure about the rest of the country. Today’s ouster of Liz Cheney from leadership by the Republican right threatens dark days ahead for our constitutional government. Cheney’s opposition to Trump, the Big Lie and her outspoken criticism of the attack on the Capitol by a Trump inspired mob has made her persona non grata to the Republican leadership.
Much has already been written on this latest development in the takeover of the Republican party by right wing extremists and those still beholden to Trump. Their ambition, avarice and obsequious behavior defies belief.
Apparently, Republican leadership hopes to regain power by genuflecting to minority rule and some of our worst traits as a people — racism, xenophobia and intolerance for anything does not conform to their definition of the political gospel. Their actions remind me of those self-defined Christians or Islamists who brook no deviation from their beliefs.
Is it not apparent to Republicans and conservatives that they can still argue their case for limited government, the free market, lower taxes and other goals without conceding leadership to those who act selfishly and are hell-bent to destroy the Republican party and its time-honored traditions?
