My regimen of reading the Wall Street Journal every morning was surprisingly pleasant this past weekend. Peggy Noonan’s column in the weekend edition of the Journal presented a balanced review of current politics which was a welcome relief from the partisan wars. In addition, I came across a marvelous recipe for Mexican food that I can’t wait to try.
As I’ve commented frequently in these pages the Journal in its role as “Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition,” too often goes over the top in cherry picking and nit picking in its opining on left of right politics. Sometimes it’s amusing, other times downright disingenuous—guess it sells a lot of papers.
Peggy Noonan’s opinion piece entitled “Biden’s Multitrillion-Dollar Gamble” struck me as a reasonable analysis without the usual sarcasm and vitriol expressed on the Journal’s opinion page. She didn’t demonize the president or belittle Democrats and their thinking. At the same time, she did not give the Democrats a free pass and was honest about her right leaning reservations about what the White House is doing. As I said, it gave a balanced picture and in doing so pulled the reader into appreciating both liberal and conservative points of view. We need more of these discussions.
If you don’t know, the Journal’s two-day weekend edition is a treasure trove of information and a delight to peruse. It includes a variety of topics ranging from architecture to book reviews and cooking, to name a few. The “Eating and Drinking” section had an interesting recipe for meatballs in chile-tomato broth. I’ve always thought that Mexican food was proof of their genius; their popular cuisine uses most of the same ingredients to produce a rich array of everything from tacos to tamales, all with different tastes. “Albondigas en caldillo” in Spanish is a go-to soup that we would call “comfort food.” Comprised of tomatoes, poblanos, cilantro, pork, onions, chiles, chard and potatoes it is easy and can be stretched out over several days for dinner and lunch. As for the Wall Street Journal, “bless its heart” for printing such a fine weekend paper.

You’ve taken the final step to become a southerner–combining Mexican food with collards! Now get some cornbread –maize to you–and some buttermilk, and the change becomes permanent!
Shouldn’t “southerner” be capitalized; it sure is in Garden and Gun!
Until you earn all of your wings, my boy, it will be lower case–just to give you something to shoot for. And then…an elaborate ceremony, repleat with academic gowns, capes, whistles, bells, and an official proclamation with “southerner” as “Southerner.” Be patient, and good things will come to you!
