I sense that the Democrats’ obsession with Donald Trump might work to bring about their defeat. In the six days since President Biden’s inauguration both the print and television media have been abuzz with non-stop condemnation of the previous president. Such, in my opinion, is overkill. The would-be-king is dead; let’s move on. We have more pressing issues to deal with as a nation. Let the sociopath hole up in opulence in Florida and forget about him. Being inconspicuous and inconsequential is his worst nightmare.
Continued harping and outrage over the depredations of our “mad king Ludwig” will only sour the public on the Democrats, hurt the party, and help confirm Republican attacks that suggest Democrats are out of control partisans. The public is exhausted from the unprecedented turmoil of the last four years. My friends tell me that they relish dialing back politics as a topic of concern and are happy they don’t have to face terrible breaking news each day. Frankly, people of all stripes seem to want to quiet the airwaves and take a break period. They are tired of all the commotion.
All of this, however, is not to say that Congress should not pursue the impeachment of the former president. It must, just as the Nuremberg trials had to go forth, to set the record straight and proclaim that justice will prevail. After all, this is about the future, to ensure that such unconstitutional, immoral, and unethical actions will not be tolerated in coming presidents and their allies, not in the world and certainly not in the United States.
I didn’t want time spent in a new administration with another impeachment, but it is hard to answer my children who tell me that I told them they had to take their medicine when they did wrong. What is the right answer, Do we let the former President off with no punishment. I am not sure I have the answer
Most of us don’t look forward to another impeachment trial, but it is imperative go forward if we hope to keep our democracy. Distasteful and disruptive, perhaps, but necessary in my opinion.
I usually agree with you, but you are wrong on this. It has only been two weeks and already the clamor has died down. It is imperative that we constantly remind all Americans of just how heinous the assault on the Capitol was. Already the Republicans are dismissing Trump’s actions and those of his supporters as “just another day in Washington.” Listening to the arguments/utterances of the GOP is like watching a sadomasochistic session with Trump as the dominatrix–Rubio, Scott, Graham, Hawley, Cruz, McConnell, Cotton–the list of the willing recipients of his abuse goes on and on! Poltroons all! You are wrong, wrong, wrong! This was an assault on the very foundations of the American republic and cannot/must not/should not be downplayed, ignored, or forgotten! Poltroons all! https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sadomasochism
I don’t disagree with most of your characterzation, but I do believe that the most effective way to take action is to impeach and convict Trump asap. Further, I worry that constant criticism and obsessing about Trump may hurt the chances to bring him and his actions to justice. Not doing so will be a tragedy for this nation.
“Damnatio memoriae”–without the wait for death! Remember some sage advice from the Bible, “An if your eye causes you offense, pluck it out!” I cannot believe that Trump’s approval ratings among the GOP is rising and includes more than 80% of Republicans who still approve of his presidency! You’re a better man than I, Gunga Din!
