The last several days have have been splendid, reminding me that life is good. Life goes on and we will blossom and prosper again despite the last four years of unprecedented abuse and nonsense at the top of our government.
We only have 63 days until President-Elect Biden takes office. There won’t be any quick return to “normal,” but slowly a balance will come about where truth and civility are respected again. The tragicomic figure who was our president will slowly lose his appeal once he is no longer center stage and it becomes increasingly clear that he has lost his power to hurt people. Perhaps his Republican enablers will find their souls once they have nothing to fear anymore. And then they might return to their conservative roots and stand for limited government, fiscal conservatism, and a strong foreign policy once again.
With luck the Democrats will be able to move forward with much needed actions such as repairing the nation’s infrastructure, working out immigration reform, improving health care, and making all of us Americans once again. Perhaps moderates in both parties, tired of the constant acrimony, will see the wisdom and benefit of working together. Perhaps.
I know that this all sounds a bit pollyannaish, but I must believe that things will eventually work out. They always have. I cannot buy into the apocalyptic visions, conspiratorial theories, and forecasts of doom put forth by the political firebrands, partisans, and ideologues. That is the stuff of conservative talk radio and Facebook revolutionaries.
