We all do, don’t we? At least those of us who have dogs and respect their uncanny skills in navigating human society. Our dog companions always make us feel better.
Think about it. Observations about dogs are always positive: dogs are always happy to see us, dogs understand our moods, dogs make us feel better and calm us during times of stress, dogs are friends for life, in sickness and health, dogs love us unconditionally, dogs are loyal, dogs befriend us, protect us and never abandon us, dogs ask for little yet give their whole being to us without reservation. Just for kicks, see if you can make a similar list for people.
This is why I have always talked to my dogs. They are a constant in my life and provide a refuge from the absurdities of people. The very being of dogs gives pause to the exigencies of the human experience.
Recently, given the awful state of American affairs, I’ve increasingly gone to the dogs. I’d like to think that if the dogs had taken over in Orwell’s Animal Farm, things would have been different.
