Most mornings, weather permitting, I ride my bike. I have a regular route through the neighborhoods, taking back streets, up to what I call Buckhead, a cluster of bars and restaurants at the corner of Arnold Rd. and Ocean Blvd., one of three main roads on the island. I’ve done this since 2020 when I first started reporting how businesses and people here coped with the coronavirus pandemic. Presently, I’m doing old man stuff, snooping, watching new construction and other changes. It’s interesting and helps me take the pulse of local politics.
For the most part, it seems safe to say that St. Simons Island is an affluent and fertile Petri dish for Republican and right wing sentiments. That is except for Marigold Court, a short almost one block street of modest homes that might best be described as cabins or cottages. There, like a fly in the ointment, a community of blue yard signs for Harris/Walz stand out as if to proclaim “not here.”
Here’s a “shout out” for the residents of Marigold Court!
I have also been taking the pulse of my neighborhood here in Marietta and I am happy to say that each morning I pass 3 Harris/ Walz signs and only one Trump sign in Princeton Lakes subdivision. My favorite is the one that say Harris Walz and on the next line it simply says “obviously”. This is not a very broad survey but it gives me hope!
Hi Barbara,
Thanks for your note, good to hear from you. I love the “obviously.” Our Republican friends down here are incorrigible, I’m afraid. They hate the Democrats more than they love their country.
I hope you guys are doing well and that Harvey is back driving both his car and the jet ski.
