Sometimes it is difficult to do the right thing. I imagine this was the case for Geoff Duncan, the former Republican Lt-Governor of Georgia, when Trump and his allies tried to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The same might be said about Brad Raffensperger, Republican Secretary of State in Georgia, when he refused to change the state’s election returns..
Duncan, who has been outspoken in his condemnation of Trump, is an outstanding example of the dedicated public office holder who unflinchingly upholds the Constitution and the rule of law.
This was dramatically evident by his recent statement in endorsing Joe Biden for president.
“I’m voting for a decent person I disagree with on policy over a criminal defendant without a moral compass.”
Duncan succinctly states what we all should do in the upcoming election for the good of the nation whether we are a Democrat, Independent or Republican.
For those of us in Georgia, I appeal to you to join Geoff Duncan in doing the right thing rather than listen to Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Bravo Pancho and bravo to the few important Republicans who have endorsed Biden. But their number is growing and let’s hope that by election time we’ll see more and more of them doing the right thing. There are plenty of good, country-before-party Republicans who may yet come out of hiding — though it takes real courage and the possibility of self-sacrifice to do it. I never thought I’d say it but God bless Liz Cheney. If she never does another thing or holds another office, she’s honored herself and secured a favored place in American history. Others, (alas, like Tim Scott, who until now I had thought of as a Republican “good guy”) have proven willing to make their Faustian bargain. We all make mistakes but selling your soul to Trump for political expediency is a moral catastrophe.
Thanks, but you and I both know those who continue to vote for Trump in spite of proof of his dishonesty and corruption. It is not a Faustian bargain if it defeats Democrats and puts money in their pockets. So sad!
A Faustian bargain is one in which someone sells their soul for worldly benefits — which is just what many Trump supporters are doing.
They know they are dealing with the Devil but they
exchange their souls for supreme court appointments, for not being primaried and losing political office, for a chance to be appointed his VP (as in Scott’s case) or for some other benefit.
Yes, i know, BUT I don’t believe they see Trump as the devil. Many see their actions as doing the right thing to save the Republic from the “socialist” Democrats rather than earning themselves worldly benefits. They would argue that it is the Democrats who make the Faustian bargain by opening the public trough to the unwashed masses for votes. Hmm…
Yes, some don’t see Trump as the Devil and are just choosing what they believe is the lesser evil. But others know quite well what a danger he is to the republic and are perhaps purposely deluding themselves about just HOW bad he is so they can achieve whatever ends they want. For that subset, it is a Faustian bargain.
But perhaps there’s hope yet: add Paul Ryan to the list of the righeous. He has said he won’t vote for Trump. Not as good as endorsing Biden but good enough. Now let’s see what the big one — Nikki Haley — does. Silent so far. There are others too that we have yet to hear from.
