Only one day went by since I wrote about the reasons for Trump’s resilience before my view was confirmed by Chris Sununu, Republican governor of New Hampshire. And, I must say that his words were a stunning acknowledgment of the corruption that has taken over the Republican Party.
This past Sunday, Governor Sununu told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s This Week that he would support Donald Trump in the upcoming 2024 election, this in spite of his ardent support for Nikki Haley in the Republican primaries.
Stephanopoulos asked: “Just to sum up. You support Trump for president even if he is convicted in the classified documents case. You support him for president even though you believe he contributed to an insurrection. You support him for president even though you believe he is lying about the last election. You support him for president even if he’s convicted in the Manhattan case. I just want to say, the answer to that is yes, correct?”
To this Sununu answered: “Yeah, me and 51 percent of America.”
Sununu’s words defy one’s belief. After vigorously campaigning for Haley as an alternative to Trump, after praising her and criticizing Trump and after admitting Trump’s criminal actions, Sununu will support Trump out of his contempt for Democrats and apparent fear of retaliation if the former president is reelected. Sununu’s words on Sunday provided a sordid sequel to the Ford Foundation’s refusal to honor Liz Chaney.
Just to be perfectly clear, don’t mistake Sununu’s action as simply that of a politician supporting the party’s candidate after a hotly contested primary: it is much more than that, it is a craven decision based on personal ambition and admission that Trump is the boss of the party.
Damn the rule of law, damn our democratic republic and damn the American people. Bow to King Donald!
