Robert, a native of Dubuque, Iowa, moved to Georgia in 1968 to earn a Ph.D. in history at the University of Georgia and never left. He attended the University of Northern Iowa, Old Dominion University, and the University of Georgia where he specialized in Latin American and U. S. diplomatic history. In addition, he developed a keen interest in politics and its impact on national and world events.
After teaching for more than thirty years, primarily in the University of Georgia System, he retired to Potlatch, his compound in the north Georgia mountains. He spends winters on St. Simons Island, Georgia, with his wife Betty, an artist, who grew up there.
