This past Saturday we had a dinner party. The central figure was Rosie who was the honored guest and the leading cook in the drama. It was a Mexican extravaganza. She planned the menu and Betty and I served as her \u201cpinches\u201d schlepping and chopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday and Saturday we scampered about Brunswick and the island gathering just the right ingredients. Fortunately, we stumbled on El Puerto Azteca run by the Familia Acevedo on Norwich Street in Brunswick, a treasure-trove of authentic foods, including nopal cactus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The menu consisted of tostados de pollo, a poblano and rice casserole with nopalito salad, frijoles refritos, guacamole, ceviche and pan de muerto; dessert was banana pudding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The featured libation of the evening was Merida-style margaritas made with fresh mango and chamoy, a spicy condiment made from fruit and chiles. It quickly became more popular than the bucket of iced Modelo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
