I\u2019m just a little bit embarrassed to be whining about the cold and hankering for spring when so many friends and others are suffering through severe cold and unprecedented winter storms. My friends in Iowa and in Canada have real reasons to complain, and now even my sister down in Texas is suffering through horrible weather. Here on St. Simons Island, it has been a colder than usual winter with too many days in the low 50s and the 40s, temperatures that seem much colder given the damp coastal location. The sun also has been absent more frequently.<\/p>\n

I guess my dissatisfaction is a function of growing older. Perhaps I\u2019ve lived in the South for so long that \u201cmy blood has thinned out.\u201d As a kid I used to wait for the snowstorms so I could get out my sleds and toboggan, go ice skating, and earn money shoveling snow. But that was a long time ago and no longer appealing for me. Now I look forward to donning shorts and a T-shirt and sneakers to walk on the beach and visit the local biergarten.<\/p>\n

I also look forward to spring planting and tending the flowers every day. Fortunately, in recent years I have been able to virtually enjoy \u201ctwo springs,\u201d one here on the island and the other a couple months later up at Potlatch. So far I have managed to start some geraniums and herbs out in the planters on the back deck, but the weather is not cooperating. In the meantime I will continue to hunker down in front of the fire, knowing that the seasons are moving in the right direction. Patience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
