This morning I was pleasantly surprised when I received the Wednesday morning Dahlonega Nugget<\/em><\/a>. There in the opinion section were two good letters from readers making a pitch for voting for the Democratic candidates in the upcoming run-off for the Senate. Given the usual diatribes against liberals and Democrats, this morning\u2019s letters gave me hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As everyone knows, the nation is focused on Georgia to see which party will control the Senate. The stakes are high. What I always find most interesting, if not depressing, is that people will vote against their best interests in the name of a political idea or party. In the case of the incumbent Senators, it seems overwhelmingly obvious to me that they view their political office more as a sinecure than as public service. Both are dizzyingly rich;  whatever happened to the idea of noblesse oblige?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The record is clear, and the performance of the incumbents in this campaign has been dismal. Why can\u2019t we elect decent Republicans who put the best interests of their constituents ahead of their own? And this goes for the Democrats as well. Most of us, I would hope, know the differences; we must stop \u201chating\u201d the other party!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incumbent senators have voted lockstep with Trump in denying the threat of the coronavirus, working against aid to state and local governments during the present crisis and both allegedly made money off insider trading.  In short, these people are not populists, and they certainly are not philanthropic in their actions.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s take stock, stand up, and do the right thing for all Georgians. Let\u2019s give the new incoming government a chance and end gridlock in Congress. Let\u2019s vote for Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
