This year I decided to forego my own New Year\u2019s Resolutions and instead suggest some that others might make for the new year. The idea is that the possibility of many making promises – rather than my often failed attempts – just might bring about some good for more of us.<\/p>\n
Americans might want to resolve:<\/p>\n
1. to take a page from psychology 101 before blurting out
\ninsults and partisan dribble and ask themselves what
\nthey hope to gain by saying these things.<\/p>\n
2. to cast votes on more than just economic
\nissues as\tdemocratic and constitutional
\nprinciples might prove to be more important
\nin the long run.<\/p>\n
3. to eschew peer pressure and think for themselves
\nrather than simply go along to get along no matter
\nhow unpleasant it might be.<\/p>\n
4. to spend at least some time studying the issues, pro
\nand con, to make informed decisions<\/p>\n
5. to avoid being fanatically partisan, understanding that
\nwe are all citizens and want only the best for the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
6. to understand that we are all entitled to an
\nopinion, but some opinions are better than others.<\/p>\n
7. to take time to fully understand what fascism,
\ncommunism and socialism really are before hurling
\nthem as insults and indictments at our opponents.<\/p>\n
8. to take time to understand what \u201cconservative\u201d and
\n\u201cliberal\u201d have meant historically and what they mean
\ntoday.<\/p>\n
9. to honestly consider the possibility that moderate is
\npreferable to reactionary or radical.<\/p>\n
10. to give serious thought to the fact that United
\nStates success is predicated on the moderate path
\nit has chosen despite the many opportunities to
\ndo otherwise.<\/p>\n
