Canadians vote today to choose parliamentary representatives and the next prime minister. Polls and word on the street seem to favor the Liberals to win again largely as a backlash at Trump and his policies toward Canada. As they say up that way, they \u201cgot their elbows up\u201d and are ready for a fight. We\u2019ll see late this evening after the polls close at 9:30 p.m. Eastern time.<\/p>\n
Much rides on this election. If the Liberals do win and Mark Carney becomes prime minister, it looks as if Canada and Canadians will send a strong message that they will oppose Trump\u2019s tariffs and his contempt of their sovereignty. If Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives win, it means that Canada could very well become a supplicant to Trump and his world view. So far, it appears that Canadians across the political spectrum, including the Bloc Quebecois, find Trump personally repugnant and his policies wrongheaded and insulting.<\/p>\n
This is an important election and all Americans should watch it closely. Canadians are a lot like us and provide a mirror that reflects our shared culture and values as North Americans. Their political system follows the English model from which ours is derived. We are both nations peopled by immigrants who support democracy, free trade and the rule of law.<\/p>\n
We should listen to the Canadians. If they effectively oppose Trump, perhaps, it will inspire Americans to do the same, at least those whose brains have not been addled or have not sold their souls to Trump for personal gain..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
