I\u2019m depressed. For days now I\u2019ve been reading about and watching the awful, inhumane attack on Ukraine. The photos increasingly have become more graphic in portraying the needless suffering, killing and destruction unleashed on the Ukrainian people. As pundits have observed, it\u2019s 1939 all over again, the world caught in the grip of a madman intent on getting his way whatever the cost. Have we learned nothing? The progress of centuries and the promise of \u201ccivilization\u201d are routinely abandoned in the context of the present. It\u2019s human greed that drives everything, trumping our morality, our religious convictions, our respect for humanity. Our decency.<\/p>\n
This becomes poignantly apparent in watching and reading the news. In Florida, the governor and his supporters are obsessing over transgender and gay people while the governor in Texas is intent on preventing abortions. The former president is traveling to South Carolina to rail against a candidate who had the temerity to criticize him.These are the most pressing issues because they work politically to make points with their constituents and get them re-elected. This morning\u2019s Wall Street Journal<\/em> opinion page offered up its usual lampoon of Joe Biden. It will sell more papers. It\u2019s laughable but deadly serious; let\u2019s fiddle while the world burns.<\/p>\n The biggest crisis on the plate of these sanctimonious arbiters of truth is that they are frightened of the Democrats, the liberals, and anyone else who harbors different views. The thing they fear the worst is the Democrats. Can you imagine that? And they are ready to give up everything, including decency and honesty to prevent the unthinkable of not winning. It is simply not negotiable regardless of what needs to be done.<\/p>\n Closer to home, as President Harding famously said, \u201cMy friends, my G*d D**n friends,\u201d seem not to care. Many are \u201cDemocrat haters\u201d as proven by their willingness to vote for a madman for president. Anything goes, they don\u2019t care about Ukraine, the world or the shameless antics of their fellow travellers. They seem to be driven by selfishness and greed for their own well-being, damn the torpedoes of morality, decency, honesty and concern for humanity. They are not worried about anything beyond their own noses.<\/p>\n I can\u2019t help but wonder how they would act if someone attacked Tallahassee or Austin or, God forbid, their favorite restaurant. Would their greatest fear still be the Democrats?
