The first year anniversary of the attack on the Capital last January 6 promises political fireworks and nonsensical polemics. Democrats, many independents and others will see the date as a failure of our democracy and be critical of those who perpetrated the awful actions of that day. Others, led by Republicans, will downplay the attack and offer all sorts of crazy interpretations. All of us, as Americans, will look silly, small and out of control. It is embarrassing.<\/p>\n
We won\u2019t be surprised by the rhetoric of Republican leaders and the likes of Marjorie Taylor Green, Matt Gaetz, Jim Jordan or Ted Cruz. And we won\u2019t be surprised by the silence of Senators Susan Collins, Mitt Romney and other respected Republicans either. The Republican Party is now \u201cAnimal Farm.\u201d<\/p>\n
What should surprise us, but probably no longer does, is the continued silence of our neighbors and friends who represent the \u201cgood\u201d Republicans, or used to anyway, many who voted for Trump twice. Though I have reached out to such friends and acquaintances, not one has acknowledged remorse over voting for Trump or been critical of the January attack on the Capital. Not one who reads these pages has spoken to these issues. They remain silent to a person. It is shameful.<\/p>\n
Almost anyone who is not blinded by partisan dribble, knows what happened a year ago on January 6. They know it for what it was, a planned attack to stop the counting of ballots to keep Trump in the White House. It was an unprecedented attack carried out by American citizens loyal to a sociopath and his lies. It was and remains the greatest challenge to our union since the Civil War.<\/p>\n
The shame of it is that many of our friends and neighbors can\u2019t or won\u2019t admit the truth. By their denial and lame excuses, they share the guilt and enable those who threaten our republic by their irresponsible and selfish actions. This political crisis will continue until the rank and file Republicans share the outrage over the insurrection last year. The Republican leadership has made a deal with the devil.<\/p>\n
