The fall season at Potlatch has been winding down for several weeks now as the weather has gotten colder and the trees shed their leaves. It marks the end of months of enjoying the woods, porch sitting and working the land. It\u2019s not long until the dog\u2019s water pail freezes over regularly and the heat is turned up for the winter.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s time to head south to St. Simons Island. There\u2019s last minute chores to winterize everything, blow the leaves off the roofs and away from the big cabin and secure the equipment, including the mules, truck and tractor, so that the critters don\u2019t move in and chew up the hoses and electrical wiring. The impatiens, hibiscus, some herbs and other annuals have already gone down while hardy shrubs such as azaleas, mountain laurel, rhododendron will fend for themselves over the coming months. A hard freeze is coming.<\/p>\n

There are also annual doctor\u2019s appointments in Atlanta and the dog\u2019s year-end physicals and shots. Got to get the 500 gallon propane tank topped off as well and the mail forwarded south. There seems to be a lot to do to just go on living.<\/p>\n
