If you turn on the television or pick up a newspaper, all the news is about the war with Iran. So far the bombing’s only success has been the “obliterating” of all other headlines. It is as if the world has taken a time out so that Americans can rush headlong into the abyss of naiveté without plans or a full understanding of the war’s mission.
Meanwhile life continues as before. Ukrainians are still being killed, ICE is still intact as a the president’s personal militia, the Epstein scandal is hamstrung, judicial rulings continue to be ignored, allies are frequently dissed, the Venezuela caper is hang fire and the global economy is crippled, all hostage to the dictates of one country and one man. Not since World War II has the world experienced such a relentless and dysfunctional evil.
For Americans at home, the distraction of the Iran War obscures the dangers of domestic politics posed by Trump and his henchmen. The future of MAGA politics is being hammered out with an urgency and vengeance to destroy liberal democracy and change American culture before Trump leaves office.
Whatever happens in Iran, we will still be threatened by the MAGA efforts to turn the country into a white Christian nationalist nation without regard for the Constitution and democratic values. In short, the United States could become a fascist state with all power centered in Washington.
The upcoming midterms could not be more critical; if the Republicans win they will have three more years to corrupt American society and lay the groundwork for their politics in the foreseeable future.
The stakes couldn’t be higher.
